The Portable Biometric System (PBS) was originally developed as part of a Force Protection Initiative to collect multi-modal biometric and biographical information for submission to the Department of Defense (DoD) Automated Biometric Identification System (ABIS).

The US Central Command (CENTCOM) desired a system with the capabilities that were engineered in the PBS, a system with integrated modular flexibility. Thus the PBS was fielded to provide an enrollment service for small or remote bases that do not have the capabilities of larger bases for biometric enrollments and scanning.

The PBS provides a robust biometric enrollment capability in austere operating environments that can be compared to other fixed or semi-fixed enrollment stations. The PBS can transmit data near real-time or store enrollment data until other communication means are available.
